By the time Sunday's action was finished, another 23 goals were scored to make the final tally 1,246. The previous record of 1,222 came in the inaugural 1992-93 Premier League campaign, when there were 22 teams in the division (two more than there are today).
There are various factors that could be behind the increase in goals this season, including longer games because of more stoppage time, more attack-minded coaches and the weakness of the promoted teams.
Manchester City's Erling Haaland retained the league's Golden Boot, ending the season with 27 goals, five ahead of Chelsea's Cole Palmer and nine behind his total from last year during his first season in England's top flight.
