— Shortstop Brayan Rocchio singled home automatic runner Ramón Laureano with one out in the 10th inning, giving the Cleveland Guardians a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.
The Oakland Athletics placed rookie shortstop Darell Hernaiz on the 10-day injured list Wednesday because of a left ankle injury.
Hernaiz was hurt while trying to leg out an infield hit in the second inning of the Athletics' 15-8 loss to the visiting Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Oakland was trailing 11-0 when Hernaiz lunged and awkwardly stepped on the bag before falling to the ground.
"First off, the effort level from Darell on that play, I'm proud of that," Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said after the game. "We're hopeful this isn't something serious. I know it's most likely a sprain."
Hernaiz, 22, is Oakland's No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Obtained in a January trade with the Baltimore Orioles, he is batting .182 in 29 games.
In a corresponding move, the Athletics recalled catcher/first baseman Tyler Soderstrom from Triple-A Las Vegas. Soderstrom, 22, played in 45 games for Oakland in 2023, batting .160 with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Oakland also selected left-hander Easton Lucas and added right-hander Osvaldo Bido from Las Vegas as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader. The A's optioned left-hander Hogan Harris to Triple-A and designated right-hander Alex Speas for assignment.
Lucas, 27, is 2-0 with a 2.87 ERA, eight walks and 13 strikeouts over 11 games (one start) for Las Vegas.
Bido, 28, is 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA, 13 walks and 39 strikeouts over six games (five starts) for Las Vegas. He is scheduled to start the second game of a doubleheader with the Rangers on Wednesday.
Harris, 27, has a 6.75 ERA in 5 1/3 innings in one appearance this season for Oakland. Speas, 26, has not appeared in a major league game this season. The Athletics purchased Speas' contract from the Chicago White Sox on April 6.
